This script sets `perf_db_export_mode = True`. With `perf_db_export_mode` enabled, if a sample originates from a hypervisor, perf doesn't set maps for "[H]" sample in the code. Consequently, `al->maps` remains NULL when `maps__machine(al->maps)` is called from `db_export__sample`. As al->maps can be NULL in case of Hypervisor samples , use thread->maps because even for Hypervisor sample, machine should exist. If we don't have machine for some reason, return -1 to avoid segmentation fault. * perf sample: Make user_regs and intr_regs optionalIan Rogers2025-02-131-9/+20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The struct dump_regs contains 512 bytes of cache_regs, meaning the two values in perf_sample contribute 1088 bytes of its total 1384 bytes size. Initializing this much memory has a cost reported by Tavian Barnes <[email protected]> as about 2.5% when running `perf script --itrace=i0`: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/d841b97b3ad2ca8bcab07e4293375fb7c32dfce7.1736618095.git.tavianator@tavianator.com/ Adrian Hunter <[email protected]> replied that the zero initialization was necessary and couldn't simply be removed. This patch aims to strike a middle ground of still zeroing the perf_sample, but removing 79% of its size by make user_regs and intr_regs optional pointers to zalloc-ed memory. To support the allocation accessors are created for user_regs and intr_regs. To support correct cleanup perf_sample__init and perf_sample__exit functions are created and added throughout the code base. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently the libtraceevent's found by pkg-config, which give the include path as: [root@localhost tmp]# pkg-config --cflags libtraceevent -I/usr/local/include/traceevent So we should include the libtraceevent headers directly without "traceevent/" prefix. * perf script cs_etm: Add map_pgoff to python dictionarySteve Clevenger2024-11-091-3/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Extract map_pgoff parameter from the dictionary, and adjust start/end range passed to objdump based on the value. A zero start_addr is filtered to prevent output of dso address range check failures. This script repeatedly sees a zero value passed in for       start_addr = cpu_data[str(cpu) + 'addr'] These zero values are not a new problem. The start_addr/stop_addr warning clutters the instruction trace output, hence this change. * perf script python: Avoid buffer overflow in python PEBS register interfaceAndi Kleen2024-09-061-8/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Running a script that processes PEBS records gives buffer overflows in valgrind. The problem is that the allocation of the register string doesn't include the terminating 0 byte. Fix this. I also replaced the very magic "28" with a more reasonable larger buffer that should fit all registers. There's no need to conserve memory here. ==2106591== Memcheck, a memory error detector ==2106591== Copyright (C) 2002-2022, and GNU GPL'd, by Julian Seward et al. ==2106591== Using Valgrind-3.22.0 and | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Pthread keys are more portable than __thread and allow the association of a destructor with the key. Use the destructor to clean up TLS callchain cursors to aid understanding memory leaks. Committer notes: Had to fixup a series of unconverted places and also check for the return of get_tls_callchain_cursor() as it may fail and return NULL. In that unlikely case we now either print something to a file, if the caller was expecting to print a callchain, or return an error code to state that resolving the callchain isn't possible. In some cases this was made easier because thread__resolve_callchain() already can fail for other reasons, so this new one (cursor == NULL) can be added and the callers don't have to explicitely check for this new condition. * perf thread: Add accessor functions for threadIan Rogers2023-06-121-7/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Using accessors will make it easier to add reference count checking in later patches. Committer notes: thread->nsinfo wasn't wrapped as it is used together with nsinfo__zput(), where does a trick to set the field with a refcount being dropped to NULL, and that doesn't work well with using thread__nsinfo(thread), that loses the &thread->nsinfo pointer. When refcount checking is added to 'struct thread', later in this series, nsinfo__zput(RC_CHK_ACCESS(thread)->nsinfo) will be used to check the thread pointer. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Python scripting can be used without libtraceevent. In particular, scripting for Intel PT does not use tracepoints, and so does not need libtraceevent support. Alter the build and employ conditional compilation to allow Python scripting without libtraceevent. Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build failures: - The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files, now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints. - We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way. From Athira: <quote> tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build -perf-y += kvm-stat.o +perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o </quote> Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests. - s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT. Also from Athira: <quote> With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment: - Without libtraceevent-devel installed - With libtraceevent-devel installed - With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1” </quote> Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/. * perf tools: Use dedicated non-atomic clear/set bit helpersSean Christopherson2022-12-052-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Use the dedicated non-atomic helpers for {clear,set}_bit() and their test variants, i.e. the double-underscore versions. Depsite being defined in atomic.h, and despite the kernel versions being atomic in the kernel, tools' {clear,set}_bit() helpers aren't actually atomic. Move to the double-underscore versions so that the versions that are expected to be atomic (for kernel developers) can be made atomic without affecting users that don't want atomic operations. No functional change intended. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add a logic to aggregate counter values to the new evsel->stats->aggr. This is not used yet so shadow stats are not updated. But later patch will convert the existing code to use it. With that, we don't need to handle AGGR_GLOBAL specially anymore. It can use the same logic with counts, prev_counts and aggr_counts. * perf tools: Support reading PERF_FORMAT_LOSTNamhyung Kim2022-08-191-5/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The recent kernel added lost count can be read from either read(2) or ring buffer data with PERF_SAMPLE_READ. As it's a variable length data we need to access it according to the format info. But for perf tools use cases, PERF_FORMAT_ID is always set. So we can only check PERF_FORMAT_LOST bit to determine the data format. Add sample_read_value_size() and next_sample_read_value() helpers to make it a bit easier to access. Use them in all places where it reads the struct sample_read_value.
