* wifi: iwlwifi: dvm: Avoid -Wflex-array-member-not-at-end warningsGustavo A. R. Silva2025-03-181-65/+67
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | -Wflex-array-member-not-at-end was introduced in GCC-14, and we are getting ready to enable it, globally. So, in order to avoid ending up with a flexible-array member in the middle of multiple other structs, we use the `__struct_group()` helper to create a new tagged `struct iwl_tx_cmd_hdr`. This structure groups together all the members of the flexible `struct iwl_tx_cmd` except the flexible array. As a result, the array is effectively separated from the rest of the members without modifying the memory layout of the flexible structure. We then change the type of the middle struct members currently causing trouble from `struct iwl_tx_cmd` to `struct iwl_tx_cmd_hdr`. We also want to ensure that when new members need to be added to the flexible structure, they are always included within the newly created tagged struct. For this, we use `static_assert()`. This ensures that the memory layout for both the flexible structure and the new tagged struct is the same after any changes. This approach avoids having to implement `struct iwl_tx_cmd_hdr` as a completely separate structure, thus preventing having to maintain two independent but basically identical structures, closing the door to potential bugs in the future. So, with these changes, fix the following warnings: drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/dvm/commands.h:2315:27: warning: structure containing a flexible array member is not at the end of another structure [-Wflex-array-member-not-at-end] drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/dvm/commands.h:2426:27: warning: structure containing a flexible array member is not at the end of another structure [-Wflex-array-member-not-at-end] Signed-off-by: Gustavo A. * treewide: Replace open-coded flex arrays in unionsKees Cook2021-10-181-2/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In support of enabling -Warray-bounds and -Wzero-length-bounds and correctly handling run-time memcpy() bounds checking, replace all open-coded flexible arrays (i.e. 0-element arrays) in unions with the DECLARE_FLEX_ARRAY() helper macro. This fixes warnings such as: fs/hpfs/anode.c: In function 'hpfs_add_sector_to_btree': fs/hpfs/anode.c:209:27: warning: array subscript 0 is outside the bounds of an interior zero-length array 'struct bplus_internal_node[0]' [-Wzero-length-bounds] 209 | anode->btree.u.internal[0].down = cpu_to_le32(a); | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~^~~ In file included from fs/hpfs/hpfs_fn.h:26, from fs/hpfs/anode.c:10: fs/hpfs/hpfs.h:412:32: note: while referencing 'internal' 412 | struct bplus_internal_node internal[0]; /* (internal) 2-word entries giving | ^~~~~~~~ drivers/net/can/usb/etas_es58x/es58x_fd.c: In function 'es58x_fd_tx_can_msg': drivers/net/can/usb/etas_es58x/es58x_fd.c:360:35: warning: array subscript 65535 is outside the bounds of an interior zero-length array 'u8[0]' {aka 'unsigned char[]'} [-Wzero-length-bounds] 360 | tx_can_msg = (typeof(tx_can_msg))&es58x_fd_urb_cmd->raw_msg[msg_len]; | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In file included from drivers/net/can/usb/etas_es58x/es58x_core.h:22, from drivers/net/can/usb/etas_es58x/es58x_fd.c:17: drivers/net/can/usb/etas_es58x/es58x_fd.h:231:6: note: while referencing 'raw_msg' 231 | u8 raw_msg[0]; | ^~~~~~~ Cc: "Gustavo A. * iwlwifi: Replace zero-length array with flexible-arrayGustavo A. R. Silva2020-06-101-6/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2], introduced in C99: struct foo { int stuff; struct boo array[]; }; By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on. Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this change: "Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1] sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues. This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.
